June 2025
After the weeks of seemingly endless rain, and despite a weather forecast of changeable weather, the Club Foster Blue Bluewater Fishing Club Competition Outing for June was held under perfect skies on Sunday 15th June.
Sea conditions were a little lumpy early on, but levelled out to perfect glassy seas as the day got older. The day saw 6 boats log on for the competition outing with 10 anglers contesting. A big welcome back to long time competition regular Joe Bujalski as he returned with a new boat after a several month hiatus. However the new boat failed to bring any great good fortune to either Joe or most of the rest of the fishers for the day. Fish catches were a little down with catch rates being lowered to average. This resulted in nine of the 10 fishos catching a title of only 30 fish for the day at a weight of a little under 20 kilos. However a real highlight of the day was a nice long tail tuna caught by Bill Greene. John Meyn’s skills were also rewarded with a agreeable 1.36 kilograms snapper.
However without any question of a doubt, bucking the trend of the average catches for the day was angler Martyn Barry with a mammoth 23 fish being a little over 19 kilograms. Best of the day for Martyn was a snapper weighing over 2 1/2 kilos. Martyn’s angling skills regularly see him being able to ‘plumb the depths’ for good catches. This competition was no exception. The day belonged to Martyn, winning the competition outing with 430.8 points.
This competition was the last for the club’s Competition Year which runs from July to June. Thus, the upcoming July competition will be the beginning of a new competition year. Perhaps more importantly though, it also sees the beginning of enacting the clubs decision to measure fish by length rather than by weight in the monthly competition outings. This will allow anglers to practise catch and release where they wish to and where they can, and promote greater sustainability in fishing practises.
