March 2025
Whilst the effects of the recent cyclone Alfred left many areas wind damaged, rivers flooded and coastal beaches severely eroded with the rising sea levels and king tides that occurred, on the whole thankfully, Forster-Tuncurry proved resilient.
With waterways being left clean, and the winds finally slowed, the Club Forster Bluewater Fishing Club monthly fishing competition went ahead on the weekend of 15th and 16th March with 8 boats and 13 fishos.
The conditions were fine and some good catches were made on many of the boats competing. Those who only came back with small numbers of fish still enjoyed a beautiful day on the ocean. Better luck next time fellas.
Despite some good numbers of fish, (54 fish caught weighing a total of just under 42 kilos) ‘stonkers’ were not to be found. There was however, similar to Februarys competition, good diversity in the total catch, with not only the usual snapper, teraglin and flathead weighed in, but also morwong, kingfish and pearl perch.
Bill Greene rated the best snapper of the day, weighing in at 1.98 kilos. Ever reliable Martyn Barry hooked best flathead of the day weighing in at 1.29 kilo, as well as being out the overall monthly competition with 325 points for the day. Martyn topped off his day by taking out the jackpotted ‘Mystery Fish’ prize with a morwong. John Habraken was second with 209.6 points.
Our next competition day is on the Easter weekend competing against Newcastle Fishing Club in the Annual Rowley Kay Competition. Unfortunately they have been our nemesis over the last many years, but here’s to hoping we can get ’em this year, and take home the cup!
