Another day, Another Rowley Kay

Easter weekend saw the Club Forster Blue Water Fishing Club host the Newcastle Blue Water Fishing Club for the annual Rowley Kay Shield. The competition has been running for the past 30 years approximately, with Newcastle winning the majority of time.

Friday’s weather presented wonderfully light winds, with favourable to good offshore boating conditions.  8 boats from each club carrying more than 20 anglers in total ventured forth to test their skills.  Whist fishing was not consistent or easy, more than 300 fish were weighed in at the end of the day. Saturday saw heavy rain and winds so only 3 boats from Newcastle Club and 1 from Forster Club set forth.  The poor conditions saw the fishing curtailed early on Saturday.

Unfortunately for your local club, Newcastle were once again victorious and took home the Rowley Kay Shield: 199 points to 114.  ‘Dollar Bill’ Szerszyn was the standout angler for the competition winning the category of most Fish Points for the competition. Best snapper (2,34kg) went to Alan McAlpine from Newcastle Club, with Ned Hughes also from Newcastle winning best flathead (1.34kg).  A somewhat expected result was a flounder winning the Best Other Fish category, caught by Brain Page of Forster club.  Go Brian!

The event wrapped up with the presentation, lunch and raffle at Club Forster on Easter Sunday. Club Forster Bluewater Fishing Club is very thankful to Club Forster for it’s sponsorship of the event, as well as for the support from our other sponsors, BCF Forster, Great Lakes Tackle Tuncurry and IMO Car wash Forster.

Till next year!

All fish that are caught/and or released are according to DPI regulations as per club By-laws. Fish are either eaten by our members that catch them or given away to their friends and family. There is also a bag limit as to how many fish of each species can be caught. The club competitions also incorporate the option to practice catch and release.
